Hinulawan Festival
HINULAWAN FESTIVAL• THE FESTIVAL
The City of Toledo celebrates its annual thanksgiving in honor of its patron saint, St. John of Sahagun every 12th day of June, one of the highlights of the twelve day celebration is the Hinulawan Festival.
Hinulawan is a contraction two Cebuano words, HIN- from hinaguan and ULAWAN from bulawan. Hinulawan is also the old name of Toledo City.
Four golden features of the city are highlighted in the festival namely : Golden Harvest, Golden Friendship, Golden Treasure and Golden Faith.
• GUIDELINES
A. PARTICIPANTS
• Open to all secondary schools / colleges, universities in the city of Toledo. Participating contingent should consist of a minimum of sixty (60) and a maximum of one hundred (100) members.
• It can be an all male, all female or a mixture of both.
• Choreographers and Dance Masters are not allowed to perform with the Contingent.
• No limit on the number of propsmen and should be in all- black outfits or in costumes to differentiate them from the dancers and instrumentalists. They are not part of the dancing contingent.
• Ten points deduction from each judge’s score sheets in violation of the above mentioned guidelines.
• Festival King, Queen and live props like Saints, animals & plants portrayed by people / humans are not part of the dancing contingent mentioned above.
• Identification – each contingent must be properly identified with 2x4 feet placard showing the contingent’s name and entry number. Placard should be white and lettering or print is in red color. Placard will be provided by the Organizing Committee (LGU)
• The code is HF ( Meaning Hinulawan Festival entry # - 1 )
B. CONCEPT / THEME / STORYLINE
• Free Interpretation
• San Juan De Sahagun city’s patron saint should be part of storyline but should not be carried and danced by a performer.
• The image can be mounted on the andas, karo or can be painted on a cloth or printed on a tarpaulin.
• Contingent may or may not submit a storyline.
C. COSTUMES / PROPS
• Contingents are given the options to use costumes of their choice according to their theme and concept. Costume accessories and props should be used in accord to the context of the theme.
• Costumes should only be pintados Cebuano, rural, Maria Clara, Neo-ethnic or a fusion of modern and traditional costumes and fantasy or creative like an oversized flower / mineral being used as a headdress or accent on the costume.
D. HINULAWAN BASIC STEPS
Basic HINULAWAN dance steps includes the following:
1. Bulawanong Paghinigalaay for Golden Friendship
2. Bulawanong Pagtuo for Golden Faith
3. Bulawanong Bahandi for Golden Treasure
4. Bulawanong Ani for Golden Harvest
• Three to four basic steps should be included in the presentation. Variations can be made by the choreographer. Absence of one basic step means a deduction of five points from each judges score sheets. Absence of three basic steps means 15- point deduction.
E. TIME
• Street dancing should be progressive. Ritual and final presentation should not be more than five minutes (5) including entrance and exit. Two (2) minutes is given its contingent to set up their props and another two (2) minutes to clear the area to give way for the next contingent.
• Official Timers are going to record the total time of performance and submit it to the judges. A five (5) point deduction is given to the contingent in excess of the maximum time given or an overtime even with a fraction of a second means five (5)- point deduction from each judge total score.
• Example: 5.00.01 means a 5- point deduction already.
• Timing starts when the first dancer steps in the entry line (white line) and ends after the last beat of the instrumentalist/drummers. For pre-set, timing starts when the music starts or with the first beat and the movement (dance or theatrical) of a solo performer or group even without music.
